The Dangerous Mentality Behind Being a "Strong Black Woman"
Simone Biles, Naomi Osaka, and other Black female athletes' prioritization of their mental health and acceptance of their vulnerability has made it necessary for us to reflect on how we as a society view Black women, and why we hold them to such high standards. The fact that Black women are seen as invincible and powerful can be uplifting, but it also denies Black women the ability to display weakness. Many articles explain the phenomenon of being a "strong Black woman" and how this expectation puts Black women in an extremely difficult position in society.
